Uses

AIM #400 Non-Fibrated Asphalt Emulsion Coating is a water-based asphalt protective coating for concrete foundations and built-up asphalt roofing. Asphalt emulsions are faster drying, very low odor alternatives to solvent-borne asphalt roof coatings. AIM #400 can be used as a base coat for reflective coatings or as a protective coating for new or existing composition roofs with smooth (not graveled) surfaces. The product can also be used to damp-proof exterior below-grade foundations and walls.

Description

AIM #400 Non-Fibrated Asphalt Emulsion Coating is manufactured from refined asphalts and select clays. AIM #400 Non-Fibrated Asphalt Emulsion Coating has a brown appearance when wet but will dry to a near-black color. AIM #400 is corrosion-resistant, non-flammable while wet, and waterproof when dry. AIM #400 does not run, crack, or sag under extreme weather conditions.

Application

Surface to be coated must be clean and in good repair. Surface must be clean. Asphalt emulsions lack the adhesive properties of solvent systems. Sweep or hose down area to remove all dust, dirt, and residues. Scrub areas where water ponds with AIM 110 Detergent Primer and rinse well. Carefully inspect area to be coated, including areas around chimneys, vent pipes, air conditioning equipment, roof edges, and parapet walls. Repair all cracks, splits, and holes with AIM 300 Plastic Roof Cement. Note that solvent-based sealants must be allowed to cure a minimum of 30 days prior to coating with AIM #400. AIM #400 is an emulsion roof coating and this product is not designed to seal leaks. Stir thoroughly before using in order to achieve proper consistency.

Apply with a four knot brush or suitable spray equipment. Cover the surface at the rate of 3 gallons per 100 square feet per application. For added protection, apply a 2nd coat at the same rate as soon as the first coat is thoroughly dry and firm enough to take foot traffic. Apply the second coat at right angles to the first. It is recommended that a reflective top coating be applied as soon as the top coat of AIM #400 has completely cured. AIM #400 typically dries within 6-24 hours in hot and dry weather conditions. Drying will be slower, 2 to 7 days, in cool, damp weather conditions. Allow AIM #400 to dry completely between coats. Coating becomes waterproof only after drying thoroughly.

For damp-proofing of below grade exterior surfaces: When coating dense concrete surfaces not subject to hydrostatic pressure, a single coat of AIM #400 is generally adequate when applied at approximately 1/16″ in thickness. If conditions are severe or when applying by spray, two coats of AIM #400 are preferable. Apply each coat at 2 to 3 gallons per 100 square feet, allowing first coat to dry before applying second coat. Fill in all crevices and grooves during application, making sure material is free from breaks and pinholes. Carry coating over exposed top and outside edge of footing.

AIM #400 Non-Fibrated Asphalt Emulsion Coating may only be applied when temperatures are expected to remain a b o v e 50°F, and if no rain is expected, for the next 24 hours. AIM #400 dries in 8 to 12 hours in warm, dry weather. Drying can take from 2 to seven days in cold, damp weather. Allow AIM #400 to dry between coats.

On below-grade foundations, allow AIM #400 to cure at least 24 to 48 hours, with air circulation, before exposure to water or backfilling. Use forced air if necessary. Clean wet coating with soap and water. Dry coating may be removed with mineral spirits. Use care when handling solvents.
