Uses
When the existing roof substrate is sound and compromised adhesion of AIM #701 Silicone Coating is not of concern, AIM #140 Acrylic Resin Primer is recommended as a bleed-blocking primer for AIM #701 Silicone Coating.
AIM #140 is not recommended as a general-purpose primer for granule surfaced roofs. AIM #140 is not recommended for use in areas with ponding water, or where water is retained more than 48 hours after rain.
Service life will be severely diminished and adhesion failure can be expected.
Description
AIM #140 Acrylic Resin Primer is a polymer emulsion resin intended as a general-purpose primer and to saturate and adhere polyester fabrics in the construction of reinforced, fluid-applied elastomeric roof membranes. AIM #140 is recommended as a bleed- blocking primer for AIM #701 Silicone Roof Coating.
AIM #140 may be used on EPDM, PVC, Hypalon, concrete, modified bitumen, and asphalt BUR roofs. Its light-yellow color changes to a darker amber hue as the coating dries. This allows for visual confirmation of the coating’s level of cure and readiness for application of the top coatings.

Application
Mechanically mix before using. Do not store above 90°F. Apply only at temperatures above 40°F and rising with less than 90% humidity and no threat of rain for 48 hours. Surfaces must be power washed clean with AIM #110 Detergent Primer. The surface may be damp but must be free of standing water. Surface temperatures should be under 100°F to avoid premature curing. If roof surface is hot, apply a light water spray to reduce its temperature.
The AIM #140 Acrylic Primer can be used for various purposes:
- When used as an asphalt bleed-through primer (as in use with AIM #701 Silicone Roof Coating), apply with a soft bristle brush, roller, or suitable spray equipment at the rate of one half to one gallon per 100 sq.ft. More will be required on alligatored or irregular surfaces. Irregular surfaces may require a prime coat to fill in and level the roof surface. Two coats may be required to block asphalt bleed through on smooth asphalt surfaces. AIM #140 may be coated with AIM #701 Silicone Roof Coating.
- When used with polyester reinforcement, when not intended to be coated with Silicone Roof Coating, apply with a soft bristle brush, roller, or suitable spray equipment at the rate of three gallons per 100 sq. ft. More will be required on alligatored or irregular surfaces. Irregular surfaces may require a prime coat to fill in and level the roof surface. Not recommended for use with polyester fabric on granule surfaced roofs. Two additional coats of AIM #720 Elastomeric Roof Coating at 1.25 to 1.5 gallons per 100 sq. ft. each is required to achieve a thickness of 20 to 30 mils. Drying time to second coat @ 70°F is 4 to 8 hours.
Clean wet coating with soap and water. Dry coating may be removed with mineral spirits. Use care when handling solvents.
